Unleashing citizen contributions to "science for all"

Find this session's presentations here.

This session will explore public engagement methods from four Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) projects that support citizens, individually or in a community, in unleashing their potential to contribute actively in the “science for all” paradigm.

Although the methods can be applied to achieve different aims, such as awareness raising, discussion or action engagement, they all pursue the same objective: making research and innovation collaborative. And why bother? Because citizen scientists have the capacity to drive social innovation as (co)-experts, have their say on financial priorities and contribute to defining research agendas. Citizens together with other stakeholders are responsible for the quality life of all members of the community. Participants will hear short impulse-talks based on the experience of EU-projects like Sparks, FoTRRIS, PROSO and NANO2ALL and have the opportunity to experiment these citizen engagement methods at round tables, before a collective wrap up concludes this session.

João will be presenting a Role-Playing version of the PROSO methodology, which uses a “participatory budgeting” approach, already tested in a range of national citizen panels delivered throughout Europe. Not (yet) an established format, and quite demanding for the citizens, this innovative method has proven to be quite effective and well received by the citizen panels that have already been carried out.

Jantien will present how creative and collaborative methods can help to collect citizen perspectives on new and emerging technologies. She will show how NANO2ALL - a project that aspires to enhance societal engagement in research and governance of nanotechnologies - uses object-building and narrative-writing exercises to engage citizens in future-thinking. The creative work with physical building material and “narrative-ingredients” serves as a supporting and stimulating structure to help participants in expressing their views and gaining a deeper understanding of their needs, concerns and values when it comes to nanotechnology developments.

Maria is Senior Project Manager and Coordinator of the Sparks Project, a traveling exhibition that is showing innovative ways of putting RRI into practice in the field of health and medicine. She will share the big picture of how citizens are performing and contributing to science development, enriching the Science and Technology landscape and expanding the conventional definition of who makes and where science is made.

ERRIN
Anett is responsible for implementing FoTRRIS within ERRIN. She will present the community-oriented and transdisciplinary methodology that FoTRRIS proposes, called MISC (Mapping Innovations on the Sustainability Curve) whereby quadruple helix stakeholders work together towards transition initiatives with the aim of improving quality life for all in a given domain. An open, inclusive, transparent and responsive process of mapping barriers and assets results in co-created multidisciplinary solutions.
