The UNESCO Roadmap for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD for 2030) developed the whole-institution approach and identifies corresponding actions to implement sustainability in extracurricular learning institutions. This session will look at how this approach can be tailored to science engagement organisations. Case studies from all over Europe will be used to reflect on the opportunities and limitations of the practical application in science centres and museums. Speakers from a wide range of institutions will contribute their specific perspectives and develop ideas for implementation from a micro to a macro level.

We The Curious (formerly known as At-Bristol) is an interactive science centre located in south west of England in the city of Bristol. Sustainability has been at the core of its operations since 2011 and we have made considerable strides in the last 11 years which include supporting Bristol to become European Green Capital in 2015. We were the first science centre in the UK to declare a climate emergency back in 2019 along with Bristol’s local council and universities and have pledged to be Carbon Net Zero by 2030. Along with operational sustainability, we have a great opportunity to engage and support the public in taking climate action. During this conversation we will be focusing on our operational plans for the next 5 years.
