A unique atmosphere

The 2022 Conference edition will be held at a very special place with a unique atmosphere: at a camp in the city of Heilbronn, hosted by experimenta science centre. With its surprising and unusual spaces, it will provide places and moments to take a breath, reflect and for many inspiring encounters – and it will allow us to look at the things we do from new perspectives. This year the programme focuses on topics of the biodiversity and climate crisis, 21st Century Skills, as well as equity, diversity and inclusion, with much more to discover!

Heilbronn: a small large city

Heilbronn is a “small large city” with the advantage of short distances. All conference events are within walking distance of each other as well as within walking distance of the city centre and the main railway station.

A "Stadtbahn" light rail system, a dense local bus network, and environmentally friendly means of transport, such as rental bikes or e-scooters, will ensure that travel within the city is not a nuisance, but a pleasure. There are a number of hotels and a youth hostel available in the city and the region, within an average rate between €65 and €120 per room and night (without breakfast).

As there are frequent regular links to Germany's high-speed long-distance railway network via the central stations of Stuttgart, Mannheim, and Würzburg, many participants can easily travel to the conference in Heilbronn by train. This will reduce significantly the CO2 footprint of the Ecsite conference.

experimenta

experimenta is 270,000 ft² and Germany’s largest and most innovative Science Center, situated in the heart of the city of Heilbronn next on the river Neckar in Southern Germany. A spectacular new building constructed from glass and steel is joined to the old restored storage building of a former oil mill. The permanent exhibition has about 275 interactive exhibits. Additional space is provided for special exhibitions. In four creative studios, visitors can discover their talents in several hands-on workshops. Laboratories offer programs for classes as well as for individuals. There is also a Maker Space and a science stage. Its Science Dome is a unique combination of theatre and planetarium with a 360° surround 3D dome projection screen as well as a revolving auditorium. On the top of the Science Center is an observatory.
