Twist

The share of women in research is extremely low in all European countries and associated countries. The TWIST project addressed this challenge with an ambitious programme of coordinated activities to raise awareness on the role and representation of women in science and technology throughout science centres and museums in Europe.

The gender dimension of research implicates that the share of women in research is extremely low in all European countries and associated countries. Throughout Europe there is a fear that interest in science and technology is declining, at the same time as demands for science and technology graduates grows (Rocard Report 2007).

The TWIST project addressed this challenge with an ambitious programme of coordinated activities to raise awareness on the role and representation of women in science and technology throughout science centres and museums in Europe, targeted young people and their teachers and parents as well as the general public, with focus on the given premises in the call - the outdated stereotypes and prejudices on societal roles for men and women and career paths.

The “Twist” project was funded by the European Commission using the Framework Programme 7 under DG Research. FP7-2009-Science-in-Society-2.1.2.1. Grant agreement no.:244584.

TWIST Teacher's guide

TWIST (Towards Women in Science and Technology) has developed a training course for teachers in primary education. The focus is on awareness towards own preconceptions about boys and girls, and how to deal with this in the daily teaching practice. More than thousand teachers across Europe attended the training already. In the Netherlands, the training was rated with an 8 out of 10 and in Denmark the feed-back has been overwhelmingly positive as well.

The TWIST project combined their knowledge in the publication: “One size fits all?”.
