No going back to normal - Part 2
Science engagement institutions can play a major role in transforming the way schools look today. These organisations are generally curious by nature, offer physical interactions with science and technology, in new learning dimensions and always in the lookout for new methodologies and ideas to test. This early adopter approach that we have can be key to help a more formal and rigid field dare to test new approaches, as they are currently doing with the implementation of some open schooling pilots.
Following a first session where the participants have had the chance to understand the impact the crisis has had, we will present and explore (in smaller groups) and challenge 3 approaches that 3 EC Open Schooling for Science Education projects test as they aim to put schools at the centre of the wellbeing of the community: the use of the make approach to work together with the community, a student-centred approach from PHERECLOS and transforming schools into Living Labs with SALL.
Session speakers
Dee's team at FixEd have been researching 100+ open schooling initiatives to elicit the main characteristics that define Open schooling. Her opening presentation will kick-off the session by sharing the main findings of their research.
Claudia is part of the team responsible for the methodology for turning school into Living Labs working on developing solutions for Food Systems. For this session Claudia will share the experience of working together with learners to transform their local communities empowering them to create solutions in the field of food systems.
ECSA | European Citizen Science Association
Simona is the lead of the Trieste Local Education Cluster of Phereclos. She will report on six models of building new learning ecosystems from Austria, Colombia, Finland, Italy, Poland and Portugal, and discuss opportunities to include a variety of stakeholders, from decision makers to the private sectors. She will highlight the participation of students as main actors to shape the future of open schooling.
Head of education and evaluation departments
Chagit will bring learnings extracted from Make it Open, a project to use maker education to open-up schools to their local community in 10 European countries. She will share the possibilities that these methodologies offer to learners to develop their agency and creativity and, to science engagement organisation to contribute to the transformation of the formal education system.
