Take a glance at 300 years of European zoo history, from the first menageries and zoos in the 17th and 18th century up to the modern scientific zoological gardens of today. Accompany animal catcher in the wild and meet the tycoons of animal trading. Feel like a panther in a cage and make the acquaintance of Bernhard Grzimek, zoo director and Oscar winner. Look into the eyes of an extinct quagga and learn about Jumbo, the world’s most famous elephant.

600 million visitors per year were registered by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) in the previous years. But what is the secret of the wild animal and why do zoological parks arouse such a great deal of public interest? In six departments the exhibition traces the history of European zoos – from the openings and goals settings of the early zoological gardens to the demands on and responsibilities of today’s zoos: “The first zoos”, “architecture”, “capture and transports”, “professions”, “zoos today” and “famous inhabitants”. Original exhibits as well as scenographic installations and amazing illustrations introduces into the exciting topic zoo. Visitors learn how a zoo works today, meet famous zoo inhabitants like the elephant “Jumbo”, “Zarafa” the first giraffe in a zoo or “Snowflake” the world`s only albino gorilla and can feel like an captive animal in entering the walkable cage.

Westfälisches Pferdemuseum Münster

Westphalian horse museum in the Allwetterzoo Münster

A unique museum project was realised in the Allwetterzoo Münster. It opened its doors in October 2002. A museum in the Zoo. 1000 square meters exhibition area are devoted to nature and cultural history of the horse in Westphalia and other topics about the horse. There are also special exhibitions. Directly next to the museum is the arena. Various performances with horses allow the visitors direct access to the living animal.
