++ Set-up of the exhibition
Xtremes is based around five main themes, each of which evokes a specific atmosphere that matches a particular extreme environment. The themes of extreme cold, heat, aridity, darkness and lack of oxygen are exhibited in specially designed, characteristic museum surroundings. The ‘Cold’ section, for instance, looks white, jagged and austere, reminiscent of ice floes, while the ‘Aridity’ section is immediately recognizable by its desiccated, cracked soil and warm lighting.
And ‘Darkness’ is a cave where you can’t see a thing, but can feel and smell all the more intensely.

++ Xtremes stimulates the senses
Look, listen, feel and discover how extreme nature effects you. Xtremes stimulates the senses. The exhibition is full of experiments and interactive games for young adventurers who want to experience what it is like to live on the edge. You will meet real survival experts. Active visitors can find out at first hand how super-specialists from the plant and animal kingdoms can survive in the most extreme conditions of cold, heat, aridity, permanent darkness or lack of oxygen.

++ Cheerful, colourful, discovering
The Xtremes exhibition lets you plunge into the world’s most dangerous spots through some thirty exhibits, ten mounted animal species and two live animal species, interactive games, challenging films, photographs and sounds. Awareness and interactivity are the key themes that make this exhibition unique!

The five themes are connected by a central passageway, along which films are projected. All the themes come together in a game where visitors can together discover where the world’s most extreme spots can be found. once visitors have picked a particular theme, they can roll up their sleeves and get down to playing. Sometimes individually, but often in a group. Numerous interactive exhibits show how plants and animals are adapted to extreme environments. visitors can easily find out how these adaptations work. And compare themselves to nature’s super- specialists – only to find out that, in many respects, plants and animals are far more skilled than humans.
