Horses and Olympic Games

Based on the historical aspects of the Olympic Games the exhibition focuses on ethical aspects and the changes of the performance requirements in the last decades and the consequences like training methods, doping scandals or accidents. It presents famous athletes and their horses and gives an overview of the results and spectacular stories of the Olympic Games coming 2008. The exhibition will be developed in cooperation with the German Sport Museum Cologne and will open end of 2008.

Since the first Olympic Games in the antique, horses are the only animals playing an important role in the Olympic competitions. Starting with the first chariot racing in Olympia, several disciplines with horses are established today: show jumping, dressage or military fascinate millions of people every four years. In the last decades the Olympic Games have been characterized by scandals like doping or rough methods of training. On the one side new medical methods of measuring and examining blood detect the disabuse of drugs, on the other side the federations expect high quality performances. Athlets should know the limit of their own abilities and the use of legal and non legal substances, although they often follow the instructions of their trainers. In difference to human beings animals in this case horses depend on the responsibility and knowledge of the owner, the riders and the veterinaries. How is this sport characterized? Are horses only used as sports equipment?

Westfälisches Pferdemuseum Münster

Westphalian horse museum in the Allwetterzoo Münster

A unique museum project was realised in the Allwetterzoo Münster. It opened its doors in October 2002. A museum in the Zoo. 1000 square meters exhibition area are devoted to nature and cultural history of the horse in Westphalia and other topics about the horse. There are also special exhibitions. Directly next to the museum is the arena. Various performances with horses allow the visitors direct access to the living animal.
