the PSC Summer Program includes a unique workshop about the secrets of the legendary ancient Egyptians.In the first part, children learn the mummification process using a human model, know the chemical materials used during the process and make a canopy jars. In the second part, children will make a tomb model and discover the ancient Egyptian chemical elements as well as the different types of dyes.The target age is 6-11 years.
The Planetarium Science Center has been celebrating Eratosthenes Festivity every year since 2003 on 21 June, the day of the summer solstice. School students gather at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Plaza to measure the circumference of the earth. This is to honor the outstanding scientist and third director of the ancient Library of Alexandria, using the method that he had used 2000 years ago. 450 participants joined this enlightening experiment and benefited from the lectures given by eminent astrologers at the Bibliotheca Conference hall.
The Planetarium Science Center at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina has had the pleasure of hosting the National Youth Chess Tournament for boys and girls of ages 8, 10, 12 & 14 years. The tournament lasted for a week and included the opening ceremony, the matches and judging, the closing ceremony and medals and cups distribution. 120 participants came from all parts of Egypt, whether previous national and international champions or new players from the Egyptian Chess Federation.
The Planetarium Science Center at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina is welcoming students that have registered to participate in the Center’ Summer Program that extends throughout the summer. Children, ages 4 to 16 divided into 4 age groups, enjoy a scheduled program of practical workshops, lectures, planetarium shows, and documentary movies. They have lots of fun practicing knowledge with the Center’ crew. This year the Program participants were about 1000 students from all school grades.
More than 120 participants from 10 Arab countries are scheduled to participate in Intel Science Competition Arab World (ISC-AW), which is the Arabic version of Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held in the United States every year (Intel ISEF). Contestants from Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia und the United Arab Emirates will showcase their distinguished science projects in various scientific and social specializations to compete for financial awards totaling $20,000 and scholarships from top Arab universities.

As part of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina 10th Anniversary celebrations, the BA Planetarium Science Center has organized The Environment Day, aiming to raise public awareness of the importance of preserving the Egyptian environment. The event comprised a diversity of interactive scientific and cultural activities, designed to suit different ages and social backgrounds, presented in a simplified layout inside a number of booths and a gigantic tent, set on the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Plaza.
The PSC has started the first semester workshops for groups this October. Workshops are mainly targeting school trips, in groups of 10 – 25 students. The workshops have various themes and are categorized according to school years. The workshops comprise hands-on scientific activities, that present scientific knowledge in a simplified and interesting approach, which would increase the students’ apptitude to science.
After years of success, the Planetarium (PSC) has celebrated its tenth anniversary. “10 years of Science Communication” closing ceremony welcomed school and college students, together with their families to share our pride in the past achievements, and our enthusiasm about the future aspirations. The ceremony took place at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Conferences Center’ Great Hall. It included a very interesting movie about the Center’s activities during its history which was full with creativity, hardwork, learning, and teamwork.
Recognizing the great need for professional science communication means in Egypt, the PSC has issued the first PSC Newsletter in 2007. The main aim of the newsletter is to outreach the public with simple scientific knowledge and inform them of the PSC latest programs and events.
The Planetarium Science Center specialists and participants has joined Sky-gazers around the world, holding up their telescopes and viewing glasses, Wednesday at 6:00 am, to watch Venus slide across the sun — a rare celestial phenomenon that will not happen again for more than 100 years. Venus, which is extremely hot, is one of Earth’s two neighbours and is so close in size to our planet that scientists at times call them near-twins.
The Planetarium Science Center has celebrated its sixth Science Festivity, under the theme: Natural Sciences, Sun and Earth, which was a huge success. there were around 5,000 visitors over the 2 days of the festivity, most of which were school students, who enjoyed the interactive workshops, and scientific displays presented at the participants’ booths. In addition to the famous Super Science Show, presented by the PSC animators, the World Park, also presented by PSC animators, and a puppet show atthe Conferences Center Small Theatre.
The Planetarium Science Center has completed the first course of its new Robotics and Electronics Program, at which students are taught about electronics through the robot components, then are introduced to programming through training them to control the robot. The Program comprised ten, 3 hours long, sessions, and took place at the Center’ computer lab, located at the workshop area. This course had 20 attendees, and is expected to be repeated, and extended to higher levels, by summer 2012.
the Intel Bibliotheca Alexandrina Science and Engineering Fair’ Closing Ceremony took place on Monday 12 March 2012, at the Bibliotheca Conferences Center, where winners’ names were announced, and various awards were given to the winning projects.
on Saturday 25th February 2012, 169 projects competed in 15 different science categories at the Intel Bibliotheca Alexandrina Science and Engineering Fair’ screening round, held at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Conferences Center, from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. The day was divided into two heats, where each heat included about 85 projects, that were judged by members of the judging committee, in line with the international standards.
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Planetarium Science Center opening, in 2002, the Center has organizeed a festivity titled “Celebrating The Future”, to celebrate all those who contributed to the promotion of scientific activities of this edifice, and to discuss the views and experiences of all the center participants. The workshop hosted a group of students who had participated in various activities at the Centre, and have represented Egypt in regional and international competitions.
