FOOD 2030 Science Education Toolkit

How can we inspire learners of all ages to critically engage with the future of food? How do we empower educators, including science centres & museums, to explore food systems, sustainability, and health with their audience? The CLEVERFOOD project has gathered high-quality tools in its FOOD 2030 Science Education Toolkit, providing an interactive and thought-provoking way to address these pressing questions.

A Toolkit for Engaging Food Science Education

Developed within the FOOD 2030 Networks, this open-access educational resource is designed for use in non-formal learning environments, such as science centres, museums, and community spaces, but also for formal educators such as teachers and informal educators including families, chefs or farmers. The toolkit offers innovative educational activities, games, and discussion prompts that invite audiences to explore the complexities of food systems—including sustainability, nutrition, and responsible consumption.

By engaging visitors in experiential learning, the toolkit encourages the development of competences inspired by the European Sustainability Competence Framework, such as critical thinking, system thinking, taking initiatives, envisionning sustainable futures or collaborating. The tools present offer a range of activities ranging from role-playing, problem-solving exercises, and storytelling, helping users navigate dilemmas around food production, climate change, and food justice.

Why Use the FOOD 2030 Toolkit?

The toolkit includes engaging activities that spark curiosity and dialogue among learners of all ages, with a focus on interactive and hands-on material. It connects cutting-edge food science and sustainability research with everyday life, with scientifically sound and future-oriented resources. The tools were selected in a wide range formats to suit different audiences and learning settings and offer flexibility & adaptability. As an open educational resource, the toolkit is freely available and easy to integrate into existing educational programs or as a support to start anew.

By integrating food science education into your offer, you can create opportunities for learners to engage with real-world challenges in an interactive and impactful way. The toolkit supports educators in facilitating discussions on ethics, innovation, and the interconnectedness of food, health, and the environment.
