Thematic Open Stage : children

In this session, speakers have exactly four minutes on stage and a video projector at their disposal to share experiences, epiphanies, projects, opinions etc with other participants - as long as they are related to children…

This session will be run jointly by Ecsite and Hands On!, the International Association for Children in Museums.

Children inspire adults because they are led by their curiosity - no questions are beyond their imaginations. So how should we, can we respond to such searching investigations? How do we explore what matters to them, so that it matters to us? In the film of Ignite!'s Community Curiosity Labs, Rick Hall will show what we can learn if we let young people lead us.

Higher education institutions can have a major role in changing the life perspectives and improving the science capital of many children and young people who are kept at the margin of the educational system. We present a case study of the Children University Programme at SISSA (Trieste, Italy) run with a small group of teenagers who have interrupted the school before the terms of the obligation. The aim of the project was exploring the potential of science to mitigate school drop out and facilitate social inclusion.

Children's Museums are our New Town Squares. Where else can you find a gathering of diverse individuals from newborn to seniors exploring, discovering, creating, discussing, hypothesizing together? Where else do multi-generational families come together to learn from and teach one another? To paraphrase David Carr.."..to find and reinvent themselves, and so to renew and reinvent their communities". The children's museum model is impacting the design of children's schools, libraries and hospitals. In four minutes I will outline some of the key reasons why and how.

How could we impart the particularities of traditional Peloponnesian architecture to children visiting a local tower mansion turned into a museum? By designing interactive experiences that immerse them into the history of the building and make them learn through play. Designing and implementing experiences like these can make museums attractive to children of all ages.

Do you think that 12-year-olds can make an antibiotics produced in their DIY lab? What about building their own private radio channel or playing with their DIY Lego robot equipped with sensors and controlled by a microcontroller? Based on experiences children are excited to be part of knowledge creation. Moreover, they are eager to share knowledge with their peers. An innovative approach of investigative learning model was developed at Kersnikova Institute for Culture, Arts and Education, Slovenia, where children in cooperation with scientists and artists investigate and create state-of-the art scientific, artistic and social knowledge.
