The primary objective of any science communication institution is the communication of science and technology. This communication can only be effective when the visitor becomes an active participant in the process. This by definition requires two-way communication, a dialogue, between the visitor and the institution. Various programmes have been developed to achieve this dialogue. These programs include science cafés, science shows, workshops, etc. Programmes are structured and presented differently from one geographical point to another – a factor due in part to cultural diversity. Institutions are responsible for considering the cultural environment in which they operate to ensure effective science communication.
Speakers from different countries (South Africa, Sweden, United States of America and Mexico) will offer a comparative look at similar programmes that are run at their respective institutions and how the programmes have been adapted for the cultural setting in which they operate. Best practices and insights into some interesting cultural considerations will be highlighted.
