Richard Tuffs, Director of the European Regions Research and Innovation Network (ERRIN – www.errinnetwork.eu ) is guest editor of this science cities-themed edition of the Ecsite Quarterly. As more and more cities develop science centres and science museums and organise local science festivals, more research is examining the reasons for such developments, how they are financed, and how their performance is evaluated. These questions were, in fact, raised during the first conference of the European project PLACES which seeks to define cities of scientific culture and examine the key criteria needed to develop and define such cities.
