Discover yesterday’s slideshow summary,  looking back on the first of three main conference days.

Newcomers started early with a networking breakfast, before joining all other attendees at the Opening event, whose speakers included Sami Kanaan, Mayor of the City of Geneva and Philippe Moreillon, Vice President of the Swiss Academy of Sciences.

The winners of the 2018 Mariano Gago Ecsite Awards were revealed at the same event. The Tycho Brahe Planetarium (Copenhagen, Denmark) won in the ‘Sustainable Success’ category for "Made in Space", an inclusive and engaging exhibition about astrophysics. Exploratório – Science Centre of Coimbra (Coimbra, Portugal) won in the ‘Smart and Simple’ category for "Astronomy for Babies", a fulldome movie for babies and their family. 

The conference’s Business Bistro opened its doors for the morning coffee break. For the rest of the day, participants were able to pick and choose between ten parallel session strands. The Quantum revolution, MakerSpacess & social inclusion, gender-inclusive management, touring exhibitions, science shops and many more were discussed and debated…

In the evening everyone re-convened for the Swiss-themed Gala Dinner, a giant fondue held in the unusual setting of Les Vernets ice rink.

Today's expected highlights: particle physicist James Beacham's keynote speech, almost 40 parallel sessions, the famous Business Bistro Happy Hour and an evening of science entertainment with the Nocturne, taking place at the Natural History Museum of Geneva. And for Ecsite members only: Breakfast with the Ecsite Board and the 2018 Annual General Meeting.
