The concept of sustainable development offers viable approaches to tackle current global challenges. However, sustainable development is dependent on the collective actions of citizens and these actions can only be influenced by education. Through education citizens will be enabled to address the complex challenges of the 21st century. As proponents of innovative education programmes, science centres and science museums can play a central part in this educational process. But Education for Sustainable Development is more than learning about global challenges and their solutions, the two authors argue.
