During Ecsite Annual Conference 2016, we had the opportunity to try one of the Hypatia's module’s activities. It was available for test in the gamelab. It was a great chance to test first hand one of the modules of Hypatia’s toolkit - an accessible, practical and ready-to-use digital collection of activities focused on gender-inclusive ways of communicating STEM, empowering teenagers and exploring the range of skills that are needed for a great variety of STEM studies and careers open to young people.
Developed by Universcience, the card game invites players to recognise the contributions by women to the history of science. The objective is to construct a timeline by identifying which scientist came before and after each other. The rules are simple: each player receives a set of two different types of cards. One type of cards contains information on historical events and helps players stablish a timeline. In the second type of cards, players find information on female scientists: picture, short biography and major scientific discover or contribution. Players have to guess if the scientist came before or after the other scientists already placed within the timeline. Simple and yet very fun, the game ask players to consider not only what they know about female scientists, but the clues on the pictures and History. At the end, player can see that so many of female contributions were paramount to scientific development, but yet so little talked about.
Have fun!
