- Workshop
International Masterclasses are organized by IPPOG, the International Particle Physics Outreach Group and the Planetarium Science Center, at the third and forth floating rooms in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Conferences Center. Each Masterclass is a one-day-activity taking place at a university or research institute. Researchers invite High school students, aged 16 – 19 and let them be scientists for one day. The core activity is a measurement with real data from CERN, provided by the experiments ATLAS, CMS, and ALICE, see: http://physicsmasterclasses.org/neu/index.php?cat=physics. Students work in groups of two on computers and can for example rediscover the structure of the proton, create a histogram with the invariant mass of the Z-Boson, and search for new particles like the Higgs-Boson. A Masterclass day (~ 8 hours) begins with introductory lectures and guided tours, followed by the hands-on activity, discussion of the results and finally an international video conference with CERN and students groups from other countries.
