INFN, the National Institute for Nuclear Physics, is the Italian Research Performance Organisation committed to the study of the fundamental constituents of matter and of the laws that govern them, under the supervision of the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR).
It performs theoretical and experimental research in the fields of subnuclear, nuclear and astroparticle physics. All INFN research activities are undertaken within a framework of international competition, in close collaboration with Italian Universities on the basis of solid academic partnerships. INFN has direct collaborations and agreements with research institutions in five continents and more than 30 countries. Fundamental research in these areas requires the use of cutting-edge technology and instruments, developed by INFN at its own laboratories and in collaboration with industries, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The technology and expertise developed by INFN for its experiments have significant implications for the medical and healthcare sectors, for high-performance computing and for the field of cultural heritage and environment.
In addition, the INFN is fully committed to promoting scientific culture. The Communication Office (UC) organises various exhibitions and events throughout the country, that each year involves the participation of hundreds of thousands of people.
