Following the six RRI keys identified by the European Commission (public engagement, gender equality, open access, science education, ethics and governance in Research & Innovation) and with the aim to start the integration of RRI within the formal and informal education of future scientists, engineers, and other professionals involved in the R+D+i process, for three years the HEIRRI project (Higher Education Institutions and Responsible Research and Innovation) focused on the potential of RRI as a transformative, critical, and radical concept.
From September 2015 to August 2018, HEIRRI designed teaching programmes at various university levels putting the focus on problem-based learning. 10 pilot courses throughout Europe were organised, as well as a set of conferences and online debates around the need to integrate RRI in higher education.
The HEIRRI Training Programmes and formative materials that resulted from this project were designed for different educational levels (bachelor’s, master’s, PhD, MOOC, Summer schools, train-the-trainer, secondary school teachers) and are mainly based on innovative and participative methodologies following a problem-based learning approach. These sets of materials are presented in multimedia formats and are available in open access at the RRI tools website.
The HEIRRI materials and the scenario based videos are also available here:
