Sharing experiences in synthetic biology public engagement

As part of European project SYNENERGENE, Ecsite is running a two-day workshop in Brussels on 8-9th April. Researchers, science engagement practitioners, policy makers and representatives of civil society are coming together to share experiences of public engagement in the field of synthetic biology. Half a dozen Ecsite members are involved in the project and contributing to this training session. An outcome of this workshop will be the production of a toolkit containing guidelines and best practices – a much needed resource to promote public awareness of this crucial yet little known research field.

SYNENERGENE

This project engaged stakeholders and the public in an open dialogue concerning synthetic biology’s potential benefits and risks and explored possibilities for its “collaborative shaping” on the basis of public participation. Ecsite brought together stakeholders to share expertise, learn from each other and develop a common understanding of crucial aspects of synthetic biology, later used to create and deliver public engagement activities.
