On 12 December 2019, the Research Executive Agency in cooperation with DG Research and Innovation organised the first "Horizon 2020 Citizen Science Cluster Meeting"
Every European project related to Citizen Science, including EU-Citizen.Science has been invited to take part in this event with a common aim to discuss the key outcomes, identify the difficulties and make some recommendations for the new Horizon Europe Programme to come.
Three workshops were covering areas of common interest:
- Challenges: Enabling citizen science to play a fuller role in research and innovation
Moderated by Rosa Arias (D-NOSES, one of our sister projects), this workshop invited participants to reflect on the mutual benefits that Citizen Science and Research and Innovation can bring to one another and evaluate the challenges that are still to overcome.
The following challenges were identified, in order of priority:
- Impact of Citizen Science
- Engagement and social inclusion
- Sustainability of projects
- Recognition of Citizen Science as a research method
- Complexity of problems
- A common vision of Citizen Science
- Good practices in co-creation and co-design
Maria Zolotonosa from Ecsite moderated this session during which good practices around open data, data privacy, social inclusion, volunteer management, sustainability of the activities and ensuring impact were debated.
- Drawing up recommendations
Marzia Mazzonetto from ECSA represented the project in the moderation of this workshop during which the role that citizens and citizen scientists can play in the framing of the Horizon 2020 programme was discussed.
