Ecsite continues support for Ukraine science community

Ecsite is proud to have successfully completed three major programmes supporting its members in Ukraine.

1. Delivering exhibitions & donations (2022–2023)

In response to the crisis, over 18 Ecsite Members stepped up to support Ukraine. Despite challenges like closed borders and supply disruptions, they remained dedicated to aiding the Ukrainian science community by donating exhibitions. Additionally, others contributed by sponsoring science communicator training and offering online courses. Most importantly, according to the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, was the sense of solidarity they received from the Ecsite community.

2. Expanding impact with the Simons Foundation (2024)

With the support of the Simons Foundation, Ecsite facilitated the donation of five exhibitions and over 40 exhibits from 11 Member organisations to the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. A key highlight of this initiative was the opening of Project Fantasy, an exhibition donated by VilVite - Bergen Science Centre, which attracted more than 8,000 visitors in its first month in Kyiv. The exhibition has since embarked on a nationwide tour, bringing interactive science experiences to communities across Ukraine. We look forward to the impact all other exhibitions and exhibits will have when they open to the public.

3. Training of Ukrainian science communicators (2024)

Ecsite, in collaboration with the Simons Foundation, organised two training programmes for 20 Ukrainian science communication professionals. Fifteen participants attended the Ecsite 2024 conference, where they took part in workshops on innovative audience engagement strategies and were able to network with their peers. Additionally, Copernicus Science Centre hosted an intensive and specifically tailored week-long training for five professionals, equipping them with the latest knowledge to share with their colleagues back home.

Through these initiatives, Ecsite and its Members continue to stand in solidarity with Ukraine by engaging the public in science and contributing to advancing the field of science communication in these challenging times.
