I have spent my career in science-driven organisations from wildlife conservation to natural history museums. I am passionate about the power of engaging people with science and societal issues, now as Director of the Museum of London I am concerned with urbanism and the development of global cities and global citizens. I am a long-time advocate of the awards' idea, which I championed when I sat on the Ecsite Board in the name of the Natural History Museum.

Medical Museion

Since June 2016, Ken Arnold has been Director of Medical Museion and Professor at Copenhagen University. He also continues as Creative Director at Wellcome, where he oversees international cultural projects. He arrived at Wellcome in 1992, where he spearheaded a number of multidisciplinary cultural initiatives, culminating in 2007 with the establishment of Wellcome Collection, in which he directed the programmes for a decade. He regularly writes and lectures on museums and on contemporary intersections between the arts and sciences. His book Cabinets for the Curious (Ashgate, 2006) explored what we can learn from looking back at England’s earliest museums. He is currently researching a book about the increasingly significant cultural role played by these enduringly curious institutions.

I am a scholar of science and society. I have worked in the UK, US, Norway, and Denmark, where I was an Associate Professor at the University of Copenhagen. I am now based at the Department of Science and Technology Studies at the University of Vienna. My work includes the books Hackerspaces (2017, Polity) and Science Communication (with Maja Horst, 2016, Palgrave).

I am a planning and design consultant for museums, historic houses and architects and remain a consultant for the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), where I occupied several functions for 20 years including Senior Vice President. I am motivated by a passion for creating exhibitions that have both an emotional and intellectual impact--perhaps changing the way visitors see their world - while actively blurring the line between art and science. Before joining AMNH I was the designer of approximately one hundred exhibitions and permanent galleries as Senior Designer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

I am Executive Manager of the Austrian Association Science Center-Network which I co-initiated in 2005. I have been working in science communication since completing my PhD at the University of Vienna as a molecular biologist. Enabling joyful learning in open and engaging settings is what I cherish within the network and in science center activities for various publics. I am an advocate for social inclusion and diversity and was a Noyce leadership fellow in 2013/14. I have served on Ecsite´s ACPC for many years and co-organised the conference in 2016 in Graz. In 2019, I was honoured to receive Ecsite´s first Beacon of the Year award.
